It’s not difficult to catch glimpses of Phillippi Creek when journeying around Sarasota. Along the southern edge of the creek rests the 60-acre county property known as Phillippi Estate Park. This wondrous property features plenty of activities for kids and adults, including a convenient kayak launch.
The History of Phillippi Estate Park
The estate park is named after a Spanish fishing rancho called Phillippi Bermudez. Phillippi owned the property and fished the waters of the creek in the early 1880s. Sending his catch to Cuba, he created a vibrant local economy in the process. As Sarasota Bay developed, William Joel Drumright bought the property for $50 in 1883. In 1987 Sarasota County bought the land and created park we know today.
Phillippi Estate Park Activities
Phillippi Estate Park offers nature trails, picnic areas, a playground for kids to enjoy and a weekly farmer’s market. It also hosts the historic Edison Keith Mansion. The must see building is listed in the National Register of Historical Places an is deeply rooted in Sarasota’s past. The mansion can also be rented for special gatherings such as weddings and corporate events.
