Myakka River where it flows under SR 72

Myakka River State Park is one of the oldest state parks in Florida. The Upper and Lower Lakes and the miles of winding river that run through them are home to impressively diverse populations of wildlife. A quiet paddle is an ideal way to observe them all.

Approximately 14 miles of the Myakka Wild and Scenic river flow through the park and there are lots of places to launch along the park‘s paved main road. We’ll highlight four launch sites within the park over the next weeks.

Immediately after the Ranger Station turn right into the parking lot for the picnic area next to Route 72. There is a passage to the picnic area at the easternmost section of the parking lot.

Take a kayak cart because it’s a fair walk across a grassy expanse to the Myakka river launch. Once at the river you have to pass under/through a tunnel of trees along the bank – which adds to the adventure.

This is a good spot for a trip to the Lower Lake and a section of the river with few people.

Directions:

From Exit 205 and I-75 go east on Rt. 72 for about 8.5 miles to the Park entrance (on the right). There is a fee to enter the park.

Enjoy your paddling adventures! See you on the water!
